Once you were a friend of a Pole you were a friend for life
“Polish people have brought their skills and work ethic to Hull and the rest of the UK, showing that they have never been scared to work and strive to achieve success,” says Sean Chaytor, the Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull and Admiral of the Humber in an interview with Brin Best.

In what ways are you aware that Polish people have contributed to the UK over the centuries?

“Polish people have contributed to the UK both culturally and economically with music and arts, and with businesses on local and national levels. Also we should not forget the major contribution made by Poles fighting for the freedom of Europe during the Second World War and in securing a free Europe at the end of the Iron Curtain. Polish people inspired many people during the struggles of Poles for their freedom during the Gdansk Shipyards action, leading to Solidarity and Lech Walesa’s prominent role in Europe in the late 20th century.”

More specifically in Hull, how are Poles helping to shape Hull as a thriving modern city today?

“Polish people have and are establishing businesses in Hull, and they serve not just the Polish community but also the rest of the residents of Hull. Polish people have brought their skills and work ethic to Hull and the rest of the UK, showing that they have never been scared to work and strive to achieve success.”

Do you have any personal memories or stories of Polish friends or colleagues over the years?

“We have had Polish friends over the years dating back to the 1980s and they were always very loyal friends. Once you were their friend you were a friend for life.”

Why do you think it is important that events promoting Polish culture, arts and music (such as the Lady Pank concert) should take place in Hull during this special year for the city?

“It is very important that we celebrate the cultural diversity in Hull, especially during the City of Culture 2017, as we need to give the public of Hull of all backgrounds the experience of the cultures of other communities. The Polish Heritage Weekend gave a taste of Polish music and arts which compliments other events for all nations – including Chinese, Asian, African and European – which have taken place or will take place later in the year.”

What is your message to Polish people in Hull and in the UK more generally?

“As it was said by Spock in Star Trek: Live long and prosper!”
